If you nervously chew on foreign objects, nibble your fingernails, or have a bad habit of using your teeth as if they were tools, then you are placing your teeth at increased risk of suffering a chip or dental fracture.
Even if the damage is limited to the tooth enamel layer, it could cause increased sensitivity and discomfort when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic things. Left untreated the chipped tooth enamel could even start to develop tooth decay.
The severity and location of the chip will largely influence the treatment and repair options that Dr. Chris Kim recommends.
A small chip can sometimes be repaired with a basic dental filling or cosmetic bonding treatment. This is more likely to be the case if the damage doesn’t alter the biting surface of the tooth.
If a chip compromises the structural integrity of the tooth might need to be restored with a dental crown. This will replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a substance like porcelain or gold. Once it has been cemented in place it will restore the full strength and function of the tooth.
